Zoe, a dedicated Anaesthetic Nurse at Royal Darwin Hospital, has implemented a unique environmental sustainability initiative aimed at fostering awareness among local school children about the importance of clean waterways. Her efforts go beyond the conventional scope of healthcare, demonstrating a commitment to community engagement and education.

The catalyst for Zoe's groundbreaking initiative came from an unexpected source – a visit from DrugWaste International in the hospital's theatres. This visit opened Zoe's eyes to the broader impact of drug disposal on the environment, particularly on waterways. Inspired by the need for proactive education, she embarked on a mission to bring this knowledge to her local community.

Taking DrugWaste Bins from the hospital to her nearby Primary School, Zoe embarked on a hands-on educational program. Her goal was clear: to impart knowledge about the correct disposal of medications and the role it plays in maintaining clean waterways. The initiative not only addressed a critical environmental issue but also provided an opportunity to empower the younger generation with knowledge that extends beyond the classroom.

Zoe's method to impart education was both creative and effective. Faced with the challenge of explaining the process of drug disposal to children, she ingeniously used play dough, beads, and coloured water to simulate the mechanism of DrugWaste Bins and the environmental impact of pharmaceuticals on waterways. This interactive approach allowed the students to grasp the importance of proper disposal methods in a fun and engaging manner.

Zoe's efforts are not only contributing to environmental sustainability but also creating a ripple effect within the community. By involving local schools, she is sowing the seeds of responsible environmental practices among future generations. The initiative serves as a testament to the impact that healthcare professionals can have beyond the confines of the hospital, influencing positive change in the broader community.
